Redesign of the Plärrer in Nuremberg

The Plärrer in Nuremberg is a major transport interchange of central significance for private motorised traffic, public transport (ÖPNV), as well as non-motorised individual transport. Beyond its traffic function, the square holds considerable importance as urban space connecting the western districts of Nuremberg with the historic city centre. As a result of the exclusively traffic-oriented planning philosophy of the 1960s and 1970s, the square today presents an unsatisfactory environment both in terms of urban design and functional quality, dominated overwhelmingly by traffic infrastructure.

The overarching objective of the integrated planning approach is the reclamation of Plärrer Square as public urban space, the reorganisation of traffic flows through reallocation of road space, the refurbishment and structural rehabilitation of the Plärrer underground railway structure located beneath the square, the adaptation and barrier-free upgrade of all public transport stops, and the realignment and comprehensive renewal of the tram operating infrastructure to meet current and future operational requirements. In addition to the redesign of traffic facilities and the underground structure, new architectural elements defining the square's character will be introduced, open spaces will be redesigned, and more than 100 new trees will be planted.

The formal plan approval procedure (Planfeststellungsverfahren) is currently being initiated, and funding applications are being prepared.
