Mobility survey Cologne 2022
In autumn 2022, the mobility behaviour of citizens was surveyed on behalf of the City of Cologne as part of a representative household survey. The aim of the survey was to obtain a differentiated picture of current mobility behaviour as an important empirical basis for the city's transport planning measures. To this end, 57,000 randomly selected households were contacted. A total of 11,426 Cologne residents took part in the multilingual mobility survey and more than 36,000 journeys were recorded.
Surveys on mobility behaviour have already been carried out in the city of Cologne in previous years. In order to ensure comparisons with the results of previous studies, in particular the last survey from 2017, the survey was conducted by PB CONSULT with a catalogue of questions adapted to the Mobility in Germany (MiD). The survey also took into account the required ‘Standards for a standardised modal split survey in NRW municipalities’.
The most recently collected data serves as an up-to-date and reliable basis for the creation of the city's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) - ‘Better through Cologne’.The results of the survey were published by the City of Cologne as part of a mobility report.
The survey showed that the city of Cologne has already made great progress in the mobility transition and impressively demonstrates that the corona pandemic, among other things, has led to a change in people's mobility behaviour and the trend towards an environmentally friendly mode of transport has once again been significantly accelerated. In terms of modal split, the bicycle has now caught up with the car.The two modes of transport each account for 25% of all journeys made. The proportion of journeys made by car has fallen by seven percentage points since 2017. The proportion of car passengers has fallen by three percentage points to 4% in the same period. The proportion of (pure) journeys on foot has increased by five percentage points compared to 2017, to 33%.
For the Cologne Office for Mobility Development, the results are not only an important basis for the sustainable mobility plan ‘Better through Cologne’, but also confirmation that the mobility transition is already in full swing.
