Powerlahn
Ecological showcase project in Central Hesse
On the banks of the Lahn River, the Stadtwerke Gießen implemented a heat pump system to extract district heating from the water's thermal energy. The integration is part of the existing heating system. The system continuously cools the Lahn River, resulting in an increased oxygen absorption capacity.
To access the water, a pipeline is installed via horizontal directional drilling at the Schlachthofstraße site.
The system consists of three heat pump units with a thermal capacity of 6 MW. Overall, the facility avoids up to 7,700 tons of CO₂ per year. This system is a key component in Gießen's goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2035.
